Frequently Asked Questions

Popular experience in the Serengeti National Park

Lake Natron is a highly alkaline soda lake in the Great Rift Valley, near the Kenyan border. Its water can reach a pH above 10 and temperatures above 40°C, and salt-loving microorganisms often turn it red and pink. Despite these extreme conditions, it is the most important breeding ground in the world for the lesser flamingo. The dramatic backdrop of Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano sacred to the Maasai, makes it one of Tanzania's most otherworldly destinations.

Lake Natron is usually reached by road from Arusha via Mto wa Mbu, a journey of around five to six hours, the last part on rough, unpaved tracks through Maasai country. The drive is part of the adventure, with volcanic scenery and Rift Valley views. Lake Natron can also be combined with the northern Serengeti by road, or reached by charter flight to a nearby airstrip.

The dry season, from June to October, is the most comfortable time to visit, with easier road access, clear skies for photographing Ol Doinyo Lengai and flamingos along the shore. The flamingo breeding season generally takes place in the second half of the year, depending on water levels. The short rains in November and December make the landscape greener, while the long rains from March to May can make roads difficult.

Yes. Lake Natron is famous for its lesser flamingos, and around three-quarters of the world's population breeds here. The best viewing is along the shoreline, where you can walk with a local guide to watch them feed in the shallow water. Their numbers change with the seasons and water levels, but flamingos are present for much of the year.

Accommodation near the lake is limited but comfortable, with a handful of tented camps and lodges around the village of Engare Sero, close to the lakeshore and the Engare Sero gorge. Most offer simple, eco-friendly facilities that fit the remote setting. We recommend staying at least one or two nights to enjoy the walks and the atmosphere.

Popular activities include guided walks along the shore to see the flamingos, hiking up the Engare Sero gorge to a waterfall and natural pools, visiting the ancient Engare Sero footprints, and spending time with the local Maasai community. For the very fit and adventurous, a night climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai rewards you with sunrise views over the Rift Valley.

Yes. The lake's water is highly alkaline and can irritate skin and eyes, so don't swim in it or walk far into the shallows, and follow your guide's advice near the shore. Temperatures often exceed 40°C, so bring plenty of water, sun protection and a hat. The Ol Doinyo Lengai climb is steep and strenuous and should only be attempted with an experienced local guide.

Yes. The short rains, usually in November and December, bring brief afternoon showers that freshen the landscape, green the surrounding hills and fill the pools of the Engare Sero waterfall. The flamingos are often still present, and there are fewer visitors. Roads to the lake can become muddy and slippery, so a 4×4 vehicle and an experienced driver are essential, both of which are included on all our safaris.

The Engare Sero footprints are a remarkable collection of more than 400 human footprints preserved in volcanic mudflats near Lake Natron, left thousands of years ago. They offer a rare glimpse into the movements of early people in the Rift Valley and are among the largest collections of ancient human footprints in Africa. A local guide can take you to the site and explain their history.

Lake Natron is often added to a northern circuit safari for travellers who want something different from classic game drives. It fits well between Lake Manyara or Ngorongoro and the northern Serengeti, where a route through Loliondo connects the two. We can build it into your itinerary for one or two nights of flamingos, volcanoes and Maasai culture.
