Frequently Asked Questions

Popular experience in the Serengeti National Park

Ruaha is one of Africa's great wilderness parks and Tanzania's second-largest national park. It is known for big lion prides, large elephant herds and a unique mix of East and Southern African species, set among rugged hills, ancient baobabs and the Great Ruaha River. With very few vehicles, it feels wild and exclusive, perfect for travellers who want to escape the crowds.

Scheduled flights connect Ruaha with Arusha, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, landing at airstrips inside the park. By road, the park is about 130 km from Iringa town, three to four hours on a gravel road, and Iringa itself is a long day's drive from Dar es Salaam. Flying in saves time and gives you more days on safari.

Ruaha is home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, hippos and crocodiles, as well as African wild dogs. It is one of the best places in East Africa to see both greater and lesser kudu, sable and roan antelope. More than 570 bird species have been recorded, including the Ruaha red-billed hornbill.

We recommend at least three nights. Ruaha is large and remote, and extra time lets you explore different areas, enjoy walking safaris and relax in the quiet of the bush. It also makes the journey worthwhile. Ruaha combines well with Nyerere or Mikumi for a longer southern circuit safari.

The dry season, from June to October, offers the best game viewing, as animals gather along the Great Ruaha River and the vegetation thins out. The wet season, from November to May, is green and beautiful, with newborn animals and excellent birdwatching, although some camps close during the heaviest rains from March to May.
