Udzungwa is the largest and most biodiverse among the Eastern Arc Mountains, a chain of forest-covered mountains rising majestically from eastern Tanzania’s coastal scrub. Often referred to as the “African Galapagos,” this region is known for its treasure-trove of endemic plants and animals, such as the delicate African violet.
Udzungwa is the only one among the ancient Eastern Arc ranges that has been designated as a national park. What sets it apart within Tanzania is its continuous closed-canopy forest, ranging from 250 meters (820 feet) to over 2,000 meters (6,560 feet) in altitude.
While not a conventional game-viewing destination, Udzungwa is a magnet for hikers. It boasts an excellent network of forest trails, including the popular half-day trek to Sanje Waterfall, a 170-meter (550-foot) marvel that cascades into the misty forested valley below. The park headquarters at Mang'ula is about 65 km south of Mikumi, around 1.5 hours by road, and about 6 hours from Dar es Salaam. It combines well with Mikumi National Park.

The most popular trail climbs through the rainforest to the Sanje Waterfall, which drops around 170 metres into the valley, with pools for a refreshing swim.
