A Natural Wonder: Eastern Arc Mountains

Udzungwa is the largest and most biodiverse among the Eastern Arc Mountains, a chain of forest-covered mountains rising majestically from eastern Tanzania’s coastal scrub. Often referred to as the “African Galapagos,” this region is known for its treasure-trove of endemic plants and animals, such as the delicate African violet.

Udzungwa National Park: A Unique Gem

Udzungwa is the only one among the ancient Eastern Arc ranges that has been designated as a national park. What sets it apart within Tanzania is its continuous closed-canopy forest, ranging from 250 meters (820 feet) to over 2,000 meters (6,560 feet) in altitude.

A Hiker’s Paradise

While not a conventional game-viewing destination, Udzungwa is a magnet for hikers. It boasts an excellent network of forest trails, including the popular half-day trek to Sanje Waterfall, a 170-meter (550-foot) marvel that cascades into the misty forested valley below.

For more experienced hikers, the two-night Mwanihana Trail leads to the high plateau, offering panoramic views over surrounding sugar plantations and reaching Mwanihana peak, the range’s second-highest point. Udzungwa is also a haven for ornithologists, with over 400 bird species, including several Eastern Arc endemics and four species unique to Udzungwa.

Primate Wonders

Udzungwa hosts six primate species, including the Iringa red colobus and Sanje Crested Mangabey, which are found nowhere else in the world. Remarkably, the latter remained undetected by biologists until 1979.
