Barafu Camp, whose name means "ice" in Swahili, is the exposed, windswept base camp for the summit, on a rocky ridge between Kibo and Mawenzi.

Climbers arrive around midday, rest and eat an early dinner, then set off around midnight for Stella Point and Uhuru Peak. Nights here are very cold, so warm layers are essential.
